There are many ways to use essential oils and aromatherapy for babies and newborns. Mostly, they come down to diffusing or a topical application.
Diffusing
This can be done with a diffuser or family members can apply certain essential oils to themselves and be a human diffuser! Can you imagine how a crying baby might respond when his parents or grandparents are wearing the Joy blend or the Gentle Baby blend when they pick him up and hold him? Or when a mom has applied one to two drops of the Joy blend to her breasts (excluding nipples) prior to nursing? This is a wonderful form of aromatherapy for babies.
My new favorite diffuser is an ultrasonic one that looks rather like a space ship. It can be programmed to have different colors by themselves or in a sequence. It even has nine different choices of times for diffusing. With newborns, most parents favor the following ones:
Diffusing at 45% capacity
Diffusing for 5 seconds and resting for 40 seconds
Diffusing for 15 seconds and resting for 50 seconds
Diaper Rash
There are so many ways that parents can use essential oils with babies, so for now, I’ll give only one example in detail.
For diaper rash, a favorite choice is the KidScents Tender Tush ointment. Why?
No toxic ingredients.
No mineral oils.
No synthetic perfumes.
No artificial colorings.
It works well!
It can be used for skin issues on people of all ages.
It contains the essential oils of sandalwood, rosewood, Roman chamomile, lavender, cistus, blue tansy, and frankincense.
When shopping for diaper rash products, it’s very important to read labels. If they contain talc or mineral oil, they might irritate your baby’s skin.
Additional Uses
Parents who have learned about essential oils use them for things like colic, coughing, cradle cap, crankiness, ear infections, eczema and other skin issues, fever, insect bites, pink eye, respiratory issues, teething and more. For all health concerns, please consult with the Essential Oils Desk Reference and your baby’s pediatrician.
Raindrop Technique
Whether you’re addressing a specific health issue that has already developed or you want to be proactive, please remember that children can also benefit from Raindrop Technique. The youngest child I’ve ever seen receiving Raindrop was a five-day-old boy who had been exposed to essential oils throughout his mother’s pregnancy.
What health choices will your baby make?
Picture in your mind, a tired mom lying on the sofa with a headache. When I was growing up, I probably would have asked my mother if I could get her an aspirin. But when my friend Christy was lying on her sofa in the middle of the day, her three-year-old son asked her, “Mom, shall I get you an oil?” That story warmed my heart!
Children learn by example and I applaud all the parents and grandparents who take the time and effort to learn about essential oils and aromatherapy for babies and newborns as the health care of choice for themselves and their family!
