Sports Related Essential Oil Uses

There are many sports related essential oil uses. With most sports, adding essential oils to the routine can help in at least three major ways:

  • Energy and endurance
  • Focus and concentration
  • Injuries

It doesn’t matter whether it is baseball, basketball, football, golf, gymnastics, jogging, jousting, running, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and more – essential oils can help.

Most of this article deals with injuries, but first, I’d like to cover energy and endurance as well as focus and concentration. At the very end, you’ll discover the most amazing product I’ve ever tried on broken and displaced bones and on sore or damaged muscles and ligaments.

Here’s a summary of what you’ll find in this article.

  • Energy and Endurance
  • Focus and Concentration

Essential Oil Uses for Energy and Endurance

For energy that lasts, a great pick-me-up is the one-ounce NingXia Red packet. Rafael Nadal, the number one tennis player in the world at the time of this writing, was recently seen on TV slamming down a NingXia Red packet before starting his warm up for the finals that evening!

The “Red” has as its primary ingredient the puree of the powerful Ningxia wolfberry, which is responsible for the gradual yet steady release of energy into the system. It also contains apricot, blueberry, pomegranate, and raspberry juices, in addition to lemon and orange oils.

Essential Oil Uses for Focus and Concentration

People who participate in sports typically depend on focus and concentration when they need it and essential oils can provide greater focus and concentration. But which oils? My favorite oils for this purpose are cedarwood, sandalwood, rosemary and ylang ylang. Both sandalwood and cedarwood are contained in the Brain Power blend. Ylang Ylang is contained in the Clarity, Dream Catcher and Gathering blends.

Additional choices include cypress, juniper, lavender, lemon (which is in the NingXia Red), basil, helichrysum, orange (also in the NingXia Red) and peppermint, as well as the blends Magnify Your Purpose, Gathering, Awaken, and Dream Catcher.

How can these oils be used for this purpose? Always consult with the Essential Oils Desk Reference, but here are my three favorite ways.

  • Inhale directly from the bottle.
  • Wear them as a cologne so that the scent is always there. Reapply during breaks or as necessary.
  • Apply to the soles of the feet as you are getting dressed.

Essential Oil Uses for Injuries

Injuries sometimes happen, no matter what the sport. Essential oils can help with injuries to the

The oils can help relieve discomfort and pain in the body and also help relieve the psychological trauma of the injury.

Essential Oil Uses for Bones

For bones, I always think first of birch essential oil, but excellent quality birch oil is extremely difficult to obtain today. Wintergreen, if it is a therapeutic grade essential oil, provides an excellent substitute.

For the pain that can accompany broken bones, the oils of wintergreen, PanAway, and spruce are excellent choices. Beyond the pain, popular oils for broken bones include thyme, Aroma Siez, PanAway, helichrysum and more. The Essential Oils Desk Reference provides a recipe for bone healing and speeding the healing process of the bone. Both recipes contain wintergreen and helichrysum.

My new favorite oil for broken bones, compression fractures, and mis-aligned bones due to an injury is the Deep Relief Roll-On. What makes this so special is the copal from South America. Deep Relief also includes the essential oils of clove, helichrysum, lemon, peppermint, vetiver and wintergreen.

Essential Oil Uses for Muscles

Essential oils can also help with muscles that are bruised, inflamed, in spasm, or just plain sore. Once again, the first oil product I reach for with a muscle injury is the Deep Relief Roll-On.

For bruised muscles, favorites include geranium, helichrysum, lavender and Aroma Siez. For muscles that are inflamed due to injury, the favorites include wintergreen, PanAway, German chamomile and nutmeg. For muscle spasms, including cramps and Charley horses, favorites include Aroma Siez, wintergreen and ravensara. For sore muscles in general, rosemary, PanAway, marjoram and peppermint are popular choices.

Please consult with the Essential Oils Desk Reference for further information and even some specific essential oil recipes. One such recipe contains equal parts of Idaho balsam fir and marjoram.

Essential Oil Uses for Connective Tissue Trauma

Whether it is a ligament, tendon or cartilage injury, essential oils are becoming an increasingly popular method of helping the situation.

For ligaments specifically, a number of people opt for a blend of Idaho balsam fir combined with marjoram. If you’re using therapeutic grade essential oils, it will take only two to three drops of each. Other popular choices are peppermint, helichrysum, the PanAway blend and the BLM supplement.

For cartilage injuries, the most popular oils are wintergreen by itself or a blend of lemongrass and marjoram. I’m also a fan of the fir oils – Idaho balsam fir, Douglas fir and white fir. For a creamier topical treatment, Regenolone is my favorite, though a number of people prefer Ortho Ease. Both of these creams contain essential oils.

New Discoveries

As new plants are discovered in Ecuador, the Amazon jungles and South America in general, we’re going to have increasingly more essential oil uses for dealing with sports injuries. D. Gary Young is distilling a number of plants that have never before been distilled in the history of the world. The copal oil in the Deep Relief Roll-On is a case in point. Please stay posted for updates on the newly-discovered South American oils that may make a huge difference in the options available for treating sports injuries with essential oils.

Essential Oil Uses for Sports Injuries

Athletes are using them in four primary ways.

  • NEAT, that is, applying them undiluted directly to the skin
  • Combine with a massage oil and then apply to skin. Some people prefer to dilute their oils 50:50 with a massage oil such as the following:
    1. V-6 Mixing Oil – for more minor injuries – has the least scent
    2. OrthoEase – in the middle
    3. OrthoSport – for more major injuries – has the most scent
  • Add Epsom salts for a foot or bath soak
  • Add directly to bath water

Essential Oil Uses for Emotional Injuries

Injuries to the body can sometimes be traumatic for both the body and the mind, and the more serious the injury, the more traumatic it can be. Essential oils can help facilitate the processing and release of emotional trauma because certain oils can tap into the emotional and memory center of the brain.

How can essential oils be used to minimize the psychological turmoil that can happen with more serious sports injuries?

  • Inhale directly from the bottle
  • Dilute 50:50 with a massage oil. Then apply 2-4 drops to specific areas as recommend in the Essential Oils Desk Reference.

What oils are typically used for trauma? The first choices are usually the Trauma Life blend or the Peace & Calming blend. Other excellent options include the Envision, Forgiveness, Hope, Release and Valor blends.

A Most Amazing Supplement!

BLM stands for bones, ligaments and muscles.

BLM, item number 3234 at EssentialOilsProducts.com

When a colleague shared with me that taking eight BLM at once let her suddenly begin moving her neck freely again, I knew that I had to have some. Eight is well above the recommended dosage, though.

I’ve used it for both muscle and bone issues. For serious and “just muttering” lower back issues, I’m usually good about 20 minutes after taking BLM. For the excruciating pain of a broken (compression fracture) femoral neck and a femoral ball that was suddenly off by about 45 degrees, BLM became one of my constant companions. I also used lots of oils both topically and internally.

People are using BLM to help with sports injuries as well as just “life.” For example, my brother used BLM after a basketball injury to his meniscus, and even after surgery for it, continues to use the BLM. My mother says that BLM helps with her arthritis pain.

Why does BLM work so well? The regular ingredients being combined with essential oils! Either would help, in my opinion, but the magic of BLM is because of the synergistic effects of the regular ingredients being combined with the oils.

Most sports-minded people know about BLM’s regular ingredients – glucosamine sulfate, Type II collagen, xylitol, rice bran, MSM, manganese citrate and potassium. Add to these the following essential oils, and you’ve got magic!

  • Clove – contains compounds with strong analgesic (pain relief) effects and anti-inflammatory effects
  • Peppermint – contains compounds that are known to relieve pain and inflammation
  • Idaho balsam fir – contains compounds with powerful anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce swelling and pain in joints
  • Wintergreen contains a compound called methyl salicylate, which has been used for decades because of its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties

BLM should be part of every athlete’s emergency first aid kit!
